Stonework & Roof Repairs to 2 Darnaway Street & 11 Wemyss Place Edinburgh
Client: Joint Tenants of 2 Darnaway Street & 11 Wemyss Place
Contractor: Forbes Davidson
Contract Value: £120,000

Situated within a World Heritage Site 2 Darnaway Street & 11 Wemyss Place is a category 'A' listed building in the heart of the Edinburgh New Town.

A preliminary inspection of the building revealed chronic and in some cases acute deterioration of some parts of the external fabric of the building. The proposed works involve stonework repairs to the top storey and stripping back, carrying out rot repairs to sarking, refelting and reslating roof and stripping out, repairing / replacing leadwork to wallhead gutters.

The main issues raised related to the residents remaining in full occupation throughout the works, the principal contractor will have to ensure a minimum amount of disruption and maintain close liaison with the clients representative. The scaffolding design will have to take into consideration the uneven grounding and basement level to the building. The scaffolding will also have to allow for safe unobstructed access to all residences and office premises at ground and basement level.

The works are due to commence in September 2008.
Electrical Refurbishment - Dunblane CathedralElectrical Refurbishment - Dunblane Cathedral
Client: Historic Scotland
Principal Contractor: EIS (South) Ltd
Contract Value: £100,000

The works comprise the removal of existing electrical wiring and redundant electrical fittings and rewiring for new lighting and power circuits (including 110V) serving the tower of the Cathedral.

Access was a major issue especially to the tower area where tower scaffolds were required to reach some areas of work. A very narrow spiral staircase was the only means of reaching the various levels of the tower. The contractor had to ensure that the scaffolding equipment could get around the spiral staircase without damaging the fabric of the building.

Phase 1 of the works is currently progressing on site with phases 2 & 3 to follow.

This along with traffic management and working in an occupied public attraction were issues addressed by the design team. Works are currently progressing on site.
